Gekleurde teststrookjes moeten worden vergeleken met de pH-kleurenschaal om de pH-waarde te bepalen: hoe kleiner het getal, hoe sterker de zuurgraad, hoe groter de waarde, hoe sterker de alkaliteit. (De term alkaliniteit of alkaliteit wordt gebruikt voor zuurbufferende capaciteit.)

Gebruik
